The mission of University Advancement is to increase public awareness and to support the University's research, teaching and public service through fundraising efforts, communications, alumni programs, and membership organizations. Advancement provides a bridge between the University and both the on- and off-campus communities with the goal of creating a climate of understanding, support, and access.

The Vice Chancellor-University Advancement reports directly to the Chancellor and is responsible for the following areas: alumni relations, communications, development, gifts and endowments, governmental relations, and University relations.


A. Alumni Relations

University Advancement is responsible for liaison between the University and the alumni organizations, and for encouraging coordinated alumni efforts on behalf of the financial and educational goals of UCI.

B. Campus Communications and Media Relations

See Section 804.

C. Development

The development operation is a combination of centralized and decentralized programs. The central development staff provides expertise in various fields such as annual giving, planned giving, corporate relations and foundation relations, and supports campuswide initiatives. Decentralized activity occurs when development officers are assigned to academic units across campus.

Development also coordinates the prospect management system for the campus.

D. Gifts and Endowments

University Advancement is responsible for ensuring all gifts to the campus are accepted, recorded, and reported according to University policies and procedures and Internal Revenue Service regulations. University Advancement is also responsible for the implementation of the UC Policy and Administrative Guidelines on Support Groups, Campus Foundations and Alumni Associations.

E. Governmental Relations

University Advancement acts as campus liaison with UC legislative representatives in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., and maintains contact with elected legislators and with governmental bodies as a vital element of community relations.

F. University Relations

University Advancement serves as a liaison between the campus and the community and acts as liaison for the Chancellor among campus departments in matters involving the community.
