UCI Administrative Policies & Procedures
a. Approval shall not be given to advertising that lists UCI as a user of any product or service or as the source of research information on which a commercial program or publication is based, except that approval may be granted for institutional or goodwill advertising clearly regarded as being in UCI's best interests. If any doubt exists as to whether the use of the UCI name will contribute to UCI's best interests, permission shall be withheld. Advertising requests must be submitted to the Associate Vice Chancellor-Administrative and Business Services.
b. Manufacture and distribution of all commercial products (lighters, clothing, pennants, drinking glasses, mugs, etc.), bearing the name, decorative seal, logo trademarks, or other identifier (e.g., "UCI Anteaters") of the Irvine campus, shall be permitted only under a license granted by the campus.
1) The Associate Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs, Campus Life and Auxiliary Services is responsible for coordination of the UCI trademark program including registration of trademarks, licensing of manufacturers of products bearing UCI trademarks, and monitoring to protect against the use of trademarks on counterfeit merchandise.
2) Commerical distributors must receive their merchandise from a licensed manufacturer.
3) On-campus sales of such merchandise are the exclusive right of the Unviersity Bookstore.
4) University-controlled funds shall be used to purchase such products from the University Bookstore or licensed manufacturers only. Applications for License Agreements are available from the Associate Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs, Campus Life and Auxiliary Services.
2. Noncommercial Use by Organizations and Groups
a. Approval to use the University's name by noncommercial organizations and groups for noncommercial purposes shall be requested from the Associate Vice Chancellor-Administrative and Business Services. Requests must be in writing.
b. Use of the UCI name to designate such groups as professional associations, employee organizations, athletic, cultural, and other interest groups may be granted when deemed to be in UCI's best interest. (For use of the University's name by campus organizations, see University of California Policies Applying to Campus Activities, Organizations, and Students, Sec. 60.30.) If any doubt exists as to whether the use will contribute to UCI's best interest, permission shall be withheld.
c. Permission, when granted, shall include the understanding that the permission does not involve, either expressly or by implication, the following:
1) Any endorsement or sponsorship by the University. In appropriate circumstances permission may be made conditional upon a requirement of an express statement that the University does not endorse or sponsor the particular activity.
2) Any obligation to provide budgetary support or office space.
d. Chancellors on other campuses shall be consulted when a decision to permit use of the University's name on one campus would make it difficult to deny a similar request on another campus (e.g., a request from another chapter or affiliate of the same organization or group).
e. Permission shall be granted with the understanding that it may be withdrawn any time the authorizing official determines that further usage will not be in the best interest of the University or that there has been a failure to adhere to the basis on which the request to use the name or abreviation was originally submitted and approved.
3. Use by Individual Employees
a. An individual employee of the University, not acting within the scope of University employment, may make a true and accurate statement of the individual's relationship with or employment by the University of California in the course of stating the employee's experience or qualifications for any academic, governmental, business, or professional credit or enrollment, or in connection with any academic, governmental, professional, or other employment.
b. In all other situations, such an employee may accurately state the employee's relationship to the University except in those circumstances in which such identification might reasonably be construed as implying the support, endorsement, advancement, or opposition of any political, religious, sociological, or economic movement, activity, or program by the University. In such circumstances it is the responsibility of the employee to issue an appropriate disclaimer concurrent with the use of the University name declaring in substance that the University is not involved in the particular activity or program.
4. Certificates
Approval for use of the University name and/or seal on certificates which indicate completion of a special course or program shall be requested from the Office of the Chancellor prior to the institution of the course or program. (See Section C.)
1. UCI Application
a. The seal must be used alone; it may not be incorporated with other symbols in a logo.
b. Use of the unofficial University seal as a symbol of the University for any official UCI-related purpose, or in connection with UCI alumni, student, or public project, must be approved by the Office of the Chancellor.
c. To request approval to use the unofficial University seal: Address a memo to the Office of the Chancellor explaining the proposed use of the seal and, when possible, include a copy of the material on which the seal is to be used. Allow at least one week for approval.
d. Approval to use the seal must be granted prior to initiating an order to reproduce it.
2. Office of the President and Multicampus Application
Use of the unofficial University seal for any official Office of the President or multicampus purpose must be approved by the Senior Vice President-Business and Finance. Requests for approval must be forwarded to the Chancellor's office for approval processing.
