COMMUNICATIONS
Communications and Public Information
Sec. 804: Communications Office

Responsible Office: Communications Office
Revised:
February 2004

A. General

The Communications Office assists the University in articulating its mission and priorities, and informing the public of UCI's achievements, academic accomplishments, and events. Through a comprehensive program that includes media relations, publications, electronic communications, and the World Wide Web, a wide variety of audiences are reached on an ongoing basis. Communications produces the uci.edu magazine, uci.news newspaper, uci.brief e-mail newsletter, and Today@UCI campus news and information Web portal.

The Office also serves as a resource for information requests from the campus and community, and provides guidelines for graphic standards, publications and editorial style.

B. Media Relations

One of the primary tasks of the Communications Office is to coordinate a sustained effort to enhance the public's positive awareness of the University. Through media relations, the Communications Office achieves this by facilitating on- and off-campus media interest in newsworthy research, scholarly work, medical and scientific advancements, community involvement, events, faculty achievements, and student honors. The office also promotes visibility of the university by facilitating the availability of faculty as experts to the media on issues of local, state, national, and global importance. Information outlets include university publications, as well as independent general and specialized print, broadcast and new media. Members of the University community are invited to submit information on newsworthy items for consideration.

The effectiveness of this program is monitored in part through a nationwide clipping service. Clippings are filed and circulated daily as appropriate, as well as stored electronically by the Communications Office.

A second important function of Communications is to advise members of the campus community on their communications needs and to help them respond to issues that have or may have public implications. The campus is encouraged to contact Communications at 949-824-6922.
