1. The Chancellor has been delegated the authority to approve naming of streets and roads, portions of buildings, small outdoor areas and other minor properties, and single-campus programs (see DA 2002). This authority includes assigning generic (functional) names to new buildings.
2. The President retains authority for naming University land reserves, buildings, major centers of activities and other highly visible properties, and major or multi-campus programs or facilities.
In general, building names should be:
1. University Advancement coordinates the review of a naming proposal with the head of the submitting unit and the Chancellor during the negotiation process for a gift, or as part of the development of a campaign plan.
2. The naming opportunity in recognition of a gift is included in the gift agreement, subject to approval by the Chancellor (for minor facilities) or the President (for major facilities). Gift agreements for both major and minor facilities are signed by the Chancellor, head of the submitting unit and the Vice Chancellor, University Advancement. These gift agreements are retained by University Advancement in perpetuity.
3. Following execution of the gift agreement, a formal naming request is prepared by the Director, Gift Policy and Administration, University Advancement, in conjunction with the submitting unit, and submitted to the Chancellor for approval (for minor facilities: streets and roads, portions of buildings, small outdoor areas and other minor properties, and single-campus programs). The Director, Gift Policy and Administration, will determine if additional review is required by the Executive Vice Chancellor and/or other campus officials.
For namings requiring Presidential approval, a cover letter and properly formatted Item for Action are prepared by the Director, Gift Policy and Administration, University Advancement, and submitted to the Vice Chancellor, Planning and Budget. Distribution copies noted on the cover letter will include:
The Vice Chancellor, Planning and Budget coordinates review by other University departments and forwards the cover letter, Item for Action, and background materials to the Chancellor. After signature by the Chancellor, University Advancement forwards the recommendation to the Office of the President for approval, and distributes copies as noted on the cover letter.
1. A proposal to name facilities is submitted by the Coordinating Point to the Chancellor, with a copy to the Executive Vice Chancellor.
2. The Chancellor consults with Campus & Environmental Planning and University Advancement on the naming proposal.
3. A final recommendation may be presented to CPEC for review by the campus community (for major facilities) or approved without CPEC review (for minor facilities).
4. The Assistant Executive Vice Chancellor, Resource Management and Analysis coordinates review by other University departments and forwards the cover letter, Item for Action, and background materials to the Chancellor. After signature by the Chancellor, the Coordinating Point forwards the recommendation to the Office of the President for approval, and distributes copies as noted on the cover letter.

Upon notification of approval from the Chancellor to name a building for an individual in recognition of a gift, Campus & Environmental Planning requests campus funding and coordinates installation of bronze, prismatic letters for the named facility in consultation with donors/honorees. Such building will receive 12" bronze letters; 8" or 10" letters will be used if design considerations dictate a smaller letter size.
