IDA 094
July 21, 1995
OFFICERS AND ADMINISTRATORS
RE: Redelegation of Authority - Use of University's Name
The authority to permit the use of the campus name was delegated to Chancellors by Presidential Delegation of Authority DA 0864, May 3, 1985. I am redelegating to the Vice Chancellor and Associate Vice Chancellor-Administrative and Business Services the authority to permit the use of the campus name (i.e., University of California, Irvine), abbreviations (e.g., UCI), logo, or any other name of which said designations or abbreviations are a part for advertising and other commercial uses in accordance with University policy and Section 700-02 of the Campus Policy and Procedures Manual.
Commercial Use
The Vice Chancellor and Associate Vice Chancellor-Administrative and Business Services are delegated the authority for license agreements with third parties involving the manufacture and/or sale of items bearing the campus name, abbreviation, or logo. This authority may be redelegated further, including positions in other control points, at the discretion of the Vice Chancellor or Associate Vice Chancellor-Administrative and Business Services. All royalties derived from third party license agreements will be applied to the Chancellor's discretionary account.
The Vice Chancellor and Associate Vice Chancellor-Administrative and Business Services are delegated the responsibility for monitoring on-campus sales of items bearing the campus name, abbreviation, or logo. This responsibility includes resolving disagreements or questions concerning on-campus sales of such items. The following policies shall apply to the on-campus sale of such items:
1. The University Bookstore shall have the exclusive right to sell items bearing the campus name, abbreviation, or logo at the Student Center and any other major consumer traffic area to be developed on campus in the future; and
2. The Alumni Association may engage in limited sales of items bearing the campus name, abbreviation, or logo at the Alumni House and may also sell such items through mailers.
3. The University Bookstore and the Alumni Association shall be exempt from royalties under the standard UCI license agreement.
Noncommercial Use
The Vice Chancellor and Associate Vice Chancellor-Administrative and Business Services are delegated the authority to approve use of the campus name, abbreviation, or logo by noncommercial organizations and groups for noncommercial purposes in accordance with University policy and Section 700-02 of the Campus Policy and Procedures Manual. This authority may be redelegated at the Vice Chancellor or Associate Vice Chancellor's discretion.
Any redelegation this authority, for commercial or noncommercial use, should be in writing with copies to the list below.
The authority to permit the use of the unofficial University of California seal is not included in this delegation of authority. Such permission must be obtained from the Chancellor's Office.
Authority is not delegated to campuses to permit use of the name "University of California", the abbreviation "UC", or any other name or abbreviation that has University-wide application or is of concern to more than one campus, or any other name of which said designations or abbreviations are a part. Such permission must be obtained from the Office of the President, through the Vice Chancellor or Associate Vice Chancellor-Administrative and Business Services in accordance with University policy and procedure.
This redelegation of authority supersede Chancellor Peltason's January 8, 1986 delegation regarding use of University's Name and his October 19, 1990 delegation regarding licensing and use of UCI logo.
