Irvine Delegations of Authority (IDA)

                         
 

What is a Delegation of Authority Letter?

Authority for making decisions at the University is communicated through various means: Policy manuals, letters, Business and Finance Bulletins. The Regents may authorize the President to redelegate certain authorities to Chancellors and other UC officers through formal Presidential Delegations of Authority (DA). The Chancellor may or may not be allowed to redelegate certain authorities to campus administrators. If permitted, the Chancellor may choose to redelegate his or her own authority and will issue a campus Irvine Delegation of Authority Letter (IDA).

Both Presidential and Irvine Delegations of Authority Letters specify the title of the position to which the authority has been delegated, the extent of the authority, and whether or not the authority can be redelegated. An Irvine Letter generally includes a reference to the Presidential Letter and any specific terms, restrictions, or requirements.

Protocol for Issuing Irvine Delegation of Authority Letters

An Irvine Letter must not conflict with any UC policy. Since redelegated authority remains with a position title, Letters should not contain individual names. Letters should follow the official format discussed in Section 103-12 of the Administrative Policies & Procedures and issued through UC Irvine's Administrative Policies Office to ensure audit-worthy recordkeeping.
