A. Purpose

This policy defines the permitted uses, as well as restrictions on the uses, of the University of California name and seals and the UC Irvine names, seal and trademarks and clarifies authority for permissions and licenses required in connection with authorized use.

B. Definitions and Certain Restrictions


University's Name University of California, the abbreviation UC, and any other name or abbreviation that has University-wide application or is a concern to more than one campus. As the property of the State of California under the Education Code, Section 92000, the University's name may be used by individuals and groups for commercial or non-commercial purposes only with permission of The Regents of the University of California.
Campus Names University of California, Irvine, abbreviations (e.g., UCI or UC Irvine), or any other name of which these designations or abbreviations are a part. The Campus Names may be used by individuals and groups for commercial or non-commercial purposes only as stated in this policy.
Trademarks Any word, term, name, symbol or device, or any combination thereof, used in connection with UC Irvine.  The Regents of the University of California own the Trademarks, including The University of California Irvine, UC Irvine, UCI and graphic representations of the same and campus mascot illustrations. Unauthorized use of these trademarks may constitute infringement of the rights afforded The Regents under federal and State law.
Official UC Seal The corporate seal of the University of California reads, "Seal of the University of California 1868." The Official UC Seal is the property of The Regents and its use is reserved for diplomas, letterhead and other corporate materials as authorized by the Secretary of The Regents. An electronic version of the Official UC Seal is not available.
Unofficial UC Seal A replica of the Official UC Seal without the words "Seal of." The Unofficial UC Seal may be used for official, non-commercial purposes and for use in connection with alumni, student, or public projects (see C.6.).
UC Irvine Seal The campus's version of the Unofficial UC Seal is imprinted with the Irvine name and may be used for UC Irvine-related purposes. Electronic versions are available from Strategic Communications.
Merchandise Apparel, headwear, and nonapparel items bearing the Campus Names, the UC Irvine Seal, and/or the Trademarks.

C. Responsibilities and Authority

      1. The Vice Chancellor-Planning & Budget is responsible for coordinating UC Irvine's trademark and licensing program and is authorized to:
        • Monitor and enforce the proper use of the Campus Names, the Unofficial UC Seal, the UC Irvine Seal, and the Trademarks
        • Permit commercial and non-commercial uses of the Campus Names, the UC Irvine Seal, and the Trademarks, and the non-commercial use of the Unofficial UC Seal
        • Negotiate, execute, adminster, and monitor licenses for commercial use of the Campus Names, the UC Irvine Seal, and the Trademarks
        • Permit the manufacture, distribution and sale of Merchandise, on or off campus
        • Monitor sales of Merchandise on and off campus
        • Collect and manage royalty income and administer related expenses for all licensed commercial uses
        • Register the Trademarks
        • Resolve disputes relating to use of the Campus Names, the Unofficial UC Seal, the UC Irvine Seal, and/or the Trademarks.

        These authorities may be redelegated to the Director-Trademark and Licensing (see IDA 545).

      2. The Associate Vice Chancellor-Strategic Communications is authorized to:
        • Approve proposed uses of the University’s Name, the Campus Names, or any other campus identifier in advertisements, in motion pictures or television broadcasts and other promotional contexts, and in connection with permits issued for filming that identifies the campus.
        • In consultation with the Vice Chancellor-Planning and Budget or Director-Trademark and Licensing, permit the use of the Campus Names, the Unofficial Seal, the UC Irvine Seal, the Trademarks or any other campus identifier (e.g., archival material, photographs, images) for public relations purposes that are in the best interests of the University.
      3. The UC Irvine Bookstore may sell Merchandise on campus. All other campus departments or business units must obtain written permission from the Vice Chancellor, Planning & Budget, or an administrator delegated this authority, prior to selling Merchandise on or off campus.
      4. Any employee involved in contracting with a commercial entity is responsible for ensuring that the corporate funding agency or supplier of goods and services is advised of State of California Education Code Section 92000 and its restrictions on the use of the University’s Name, the Campus Names and the Trademarks contained in this policy. A request may be approved by a contracting officer only if the use of the University or Campus Name is a true and accurate statement of fact and not contrary to the interests of the University and the campus.
      5. Deans, directors and administrative officers are responsible for bringing any suspected unauthorized use of the University’s Name, the Official UC Seal, the Unofficial UC Seal, the UC Irvine Seal, the Campus Names or the Trademarks, or uses otherwise contrary to this policy, to the attention of those responsible for authorizing use.
      6. The Executive Vice President – Business Operations, Office of the President, is authorized to permit use of the Unofficial UC Seal for any official Universitywide application or whenever such use concerns more than one campus, and to approve requests to manufacture and/or distribute commercial products bearing the University’s Name and/or the Unofficial UC Seal (as distinguished from the Campus Names, the Trademarks or the UC Irvine Seal).

D. Individual Use by Campus Employees

      1. Employees may use the University’s Name and the Campus Names in making true and accurate statements of their relationship with, or employment by, the University of California in the course of application for other employment, or stating the employee’s experience or qualifications for any academic, governmental, business or professional credit or enrollment.
      2. Employees may not use the University’s Name, or the Campus Names, or their affiliation with the University in any manner which suggests or implies University support or endorsement of any movement, activity or program. In circumstances where University endorsement or support may be construed from an individual’s use, a disclaimer is required.

E. Non-Commercial Use by Organizations and Groups

      1. Non-commercial use of the Campus Names by registered student groups and affiliated organizations and by recognized alumni organizations and support groups is permitted (e.g., to identify an affiliation with UC Irvine on posters or flyers), in accordance with other University and campus policies. However, use of a Campus Name on Merchandise requires prior authorization in writing.
      2. Prior authorization in writing is required for any use of the Unofficial UC Seal, the UC Irvine Seal, and the Trademarks by non-commercial organizations and groups for non-commercial purposes.
      3. A campus organization may state that its membership comprises University students, faculty or staff, but it may not indicate or imply that it is acting on behalf of the University.
      4. Events and activities presented by campus organizations must not be advertised or promoted in any way that suggests the function is sponsored or endorsed by the University unless prior approval has been obtained from the office responsible for coordinating the organization’s relationship with the University. Permission may be withdrawn at any time if it is determined that further usage is not in the best interests of the University or does not comply with the original intent of the approved permission.
      5. Use of the University’s Name and the Campus Names by non-affiliated organizations and groups is prohibited.

F. Use in Advertising

Advertising that displays or lists the University as a user of any product or service or as the source of research information on which a commercial product, program or publication is based is prohibited. This prohibition extends to advertising using the University’s Name, the Campus Names, the Unofficial UC Seal, the UC Irvine Seal, the Trademarks or any picture, landmark, building or other campus identifier. Approval will only be granted for institutional or goodwill advertising clearly regarded as being in the best interests of the University.

G. Commercial Use

      1. All commercial use of the Campus Names, the UC Irvine Seal, and the Trademarks, including the manufacture and/or distribution of all Merchandise, is permitted only by license or authorization. All Merchandise must be distributed through the UC Irvine Bookstore or by authorized licensees.
      2. Manufacture and distribution of all commercial products bearing the University’s Name and/or the Unofficial UC Seal is governed by the Office of the President and cannot be authorized by the UC Irvine campus.
      3. Commercial vendors and distributors must receive their Merchandise from a licensed manufacturer.
      4. On-campus sales of Merchandise are the exclusive right of the UC Irvine Bookstore.
      5. Campus departments and business units may not conduct sales of Merchandise, either directly or through a third party except under certain conditions (e.g., sales of department T-shirts) and with prior written permission of the Vice Chancellor, Planning & Budget or an administrator delegated this authority.
      6. University-controlled funds may be used to purchase Merchandise only from the UC Irvine Bookstore or licensed manufacturers, vendors or distributors.

H. Trademark and Licensing Committee

A Trademark and Licensing Committee comprising representatives from Planning and Budget, Strategic Communications, Intercollegiate Athletics, Student Affairs, and others as necessary, will be assembled by the Director-Trademark and Licensing to advise on trademark and licensing issues. The committee will review the policy annually and recommend any revisions to the Vice Chancellor-Planning & Budget.

I. Unauthorized Use

Any suspected unauthorized use of the University’s Name, the Official UC Seal, the Unofficial UC Seal, the UC Irvine Seal, the Campus Names or the Trademarks, or uses otherwise contrary to this policy should be reported to the Director-Trademark and Licensing or Vice Chancellor-Planning and Budget. The name University of California is the property of the State of California under the Education Code, Section 92000 and unauthorized use for commercial or non-commercial purposes is a violation of Section 92000 and considered a misdemeanor under State law.
